How to Layer for Fall Without the Bulk
Fall weather changes by the hour. A cold morning turns into a warm afternoon, and you end up carrying half your outfit. The answer is not more layers, but better ones. We use a simple formula: a thin base, a soft middle and one good outer layer.
Layer 1: a thin base
Start with something close to the body: a fitted long-sleeve tee or a fine turtleneck. Thin layers trap warmth without adding volume, so everything on top still fits.
Layer 2: the knit
This is where the warmth and the personality come in. A cable knit like the Anoukria cable knit turtleneck works on its own on milder days. On colder days, a button-front cardigan such as the Fenriel button-front cardigan is easier to take off when you step inside.
Layer 3: one outer piece
Choose your coat by the length of what is underneath. A cropped style like the Marenienne cropped trench or the Averlise sherpa-lined biker jacket works best over dresses and longer knits. A longer coat like the Tindradora quilted long coat covers everything on the coldest days.
Keep the bulk down
- One chunky piece per outfit. If the sweater is thick, keep the coat lean, and the other way around.
- Show the waist. A belt over a long cardigan or coat keeps layers from looking shapeless.
- Stay in one color family. Camel, cream and brown layered together look calm and intentional, even when there are three pieces.
- Finish with the right shoe. A sleek boot like the Verenaienne Chelsea boots balances a heavier top half.
